August 2026: 'smooth sailing'?

After a lackluster July, stock markets staged a recovery in August, with the exception of listed real estate. Meanwhile, capital market interest rates continued to rise, driven in part by persistent inflationary pressure and concerns regarding the sustainability of government debt.

Rising interest rates weighed on bonds; government bonds fell by 0.6% and investment-grade corporate bonds by 0.2%. Real estate also suffered from rising rates—particularly the anticipated increase in short-term interest rates. Real estate lost 4.6% in August, making it the worst-performing asset class of the month and for the year to date.
